Winter Running

Today was the second five-mile run of the week.  It was also the second day in a row of running around the campus instead of on a county road.  My runs normally focus on those roads as I typically would just come home from work, take Sparky out, then get dressed and go for a 4-6 mile run – depending on how far I felt like going.

These past two runs however, I decided to simply take my gear with me and change directly into it right after work.  This allowed me to run around the campus – after which I would then go home.  While this means that Sparky would have to stay in his cage longer, it was actually pretty minimal and I think that it’s better as I can then devote time to him when I got home instead of having to leave him alone for almost an hour just after he’d seen me.

Regardless of that, I’ve noticed something these last few runs.  While my time has gotten better lately (I’m not around an 8:08 avg pace), I am much more tired after the fact.  While this could just be because it’s so cold outside, I wasn’t this tired a month ago.  Well what’s changed in the last month?  I’ve started isotretinoin.  My doctor has warned me that he doesn’t prescribe this to Purdue sports people during their season as it can make you feel like you just can’t go as far.  I’m finding that while I’m able to push myself during the run itself, afterwards I am completely drained and pretty much worthless until the next day or even further.

I had hoped to run 5-6 miles tomorrow as the weather was going to be near 40, but given how tired I already am, it doesn’t seem like a good idea. Needless to say, I’m already counting the days until I am done with this medication.  Unfortunately, it’s still just over four more months away.  Yippee!  :-)

Skin Changes

Today was my sixteenth dosage of isotretinoin. I can clearly see the changes that are already happening. As I am sure others can as well.

For one, my face is considerably drier. It no longer is oily as the sebaceous glands are starting to shutdown. I need to apply moisturizer several times a day to counteract the heavy flaking that I am having.

Also, my lips are much drier. As I previously posted, I normally never need chapstick but am applying it more and more now.

I have not noticed much difference on my back which is the worst part and what is really bring targeted. I have however begun to notice my arms becoming quite thin where the worst acne is. This is causing the areas to release quite easily and also stand out heavily.

Hopefully the effects hit my back soon as much as they’ve hit everywhere else…

Happy Birthday Justin!

Happy Birthday, Justin!

Today Justin turned 26 years old. We celebrated by playing Super Mario Bros on the Wii and having dinner at Logan’s Roadhouse. Justin had a surf and turf dinner while I had the New York strip. We are glad we tried it but wouldn’t really go back.

Anyway, Happy Birthday Justin!

Sparky Ate Christmas

Over Christmas this past December, we had taken Sparky along with our Canon DSLR EOS Rebel T1i camera and took a number of pictures of various things during the holiday.

The following week, I had taken vacation time to get caught up at home and on one of the days decided to download the pictures from the card.  I usually just take the SDHC card from the camera and plug it directly into my Mac and then download the photos directly into Aperture.  This time, I took the card out and put it on the coffee table and went to get my Macbook.  However, when I got back to the living room Sparky had the card in his mouth and I heard a crunch!  I was able to pull the card from his mouth, but it was way too late already.  After taking the casing apart, it was very clear that he had destroyed both of the memory chips, thereby destroying the card and any chance of recovering the pictures.  For me, the pictures were bad to lose, but I was much more worried about the card itself.  This was a 32GB SDHC memory card.  It was only class 4, but still – not cheap.

For the past few weeks I’ve hobbled along on a small little 1GB SD card but last week I found a great deal for a 8GB class 10 SDHC memory card.  I haven’t had any time to play around with the card yet, but it will handle a better 1,200 photos versus the 140 I could cram on the 1GB – better given how many I’m known to take in a full day of shooting.  This card will be quite nice as well for high-speed shooting along with video capture.

Isotretinoin – Week 2

Today starts week two of my treatment with Isotretinoin.  So, what’s changed so far?

Well, I’ve only gone through one week of treatment but some changes are starting to take place.  While I’ve not noticed any difference in the acne distribution and strength on my back, I have started to notice one of the most common side-effects – dry lips.  I haven’t really used Chapstick in a long time but have in the last few days applied it several times as my lips are tending to get dry at times.  I know that this will increase massively over the entire course of my treatment.

Although the strength of the acne on my back has not changed, I think that my back is starting to get a bit dryer although it very well could have just been from the relatively low humidity lately with the winter weather.

We’ll see what the next week brings and if the effects become more noticeable.

Vibram Five Fingers

In the middle of October, I decided to take the plunge and buy a pair of Vibram Five Finger shoes.  I’d seen a few people wearing them in the gym and had heard about them before, but had never actually tried them on even.  I decided that the idea of barefoot running was intriguing enough to justify the cost of purchasing the shoes.  Naturally, because I’ll try to get a discount if possible, I signed up for an account on RockCreek.com first which gave me a 15% off coupon for my first purchase.  My first purchase being the Vibram KSO (Keep Stuff Out).  I had purchased a size 42 at first which turned out to be slightly too tight which required that I had to send it back and re-order the correct size.  RockCreek’s customer service team were great in getting this resolved for me as well.

After I received the correctly-sized shoe (size 43), I went for my first run in them – which was to go two laps around our ponds which is a total of three miles.  This turned out to be a mistake.  I wasn’t expecting the massively different way in which you run without the cushion of a normal shoe.  I ended up making my calves hurt so bad that I could barely walk for almost a week.  This proved to be especially bad as my first half-marathon was just one week away.  I reverted back to normal shoes and forced myself to run what I could so that I wasn’t completely worthless during that race.

After my half-marathon, I went back to the Vibrams.  I started off by just wearing them around the house and after a short while started wearing them to work.  It was weird as you could feel everything since they are pretty thin.  I also started running an occasional 1.5 mile run to try to force myself to adjust my running pattern to account for the different stride required.  After enough time of that I finally started running on the road.  My road runs are generally longer – about 4-7 miles.  You wouldn’t think that running on the road is that much different from running on a pavement around a pond, but it’s a subtle difference.

During Black Friday this year, RockCreek was giving 20% off of your order for the entire weekend.  I took the opportunity to buy a new pair of Vibrams.  This pair however, was the Vibram Five Finger Flow.  I chose this style as it was better suited to cold/wet conditions and the mesh of the KSO was making my feet quite cold as the weather was starting to get colder and colder.

I’ve now been running exclusively in the Flow since I received them and wearing them to work as well on occasion.  They are quite nice and seem to give a bit more protection under my feet although the neoprene on the top has really helped to keep my feet a lot warmer.  They are also tighter fit around the ankles which helps to “seal” the feet so they stay warmer and dryer as well.

Another item which has helped is that I had finally ordered some socks.  I had ordered some cheap toe-socks from Meritline.com which are OK.  They work, but the pair that I received for Christmas from my parents are significantly better.  They are the Injinji Performance mini-crew sock. Quite comfortable and very warm.  Would highly recommend them to anyone wanting to buy a pair to go with your Vibrams.

Are they weird?  Yes.  Do people look at me differently?  Sure they do.  I’ve gotten asked about them while shopping at WalMart and also while buying gas.  My co-workers have affectionally started calling them my “monkey shoes.”  However, they are pretty comfortable and I can’t really see myself going back to running in “normal” shoes again.

Dropquest 2011

Hooray!  This morning at about 1AM I completed the Dropquest 2011 for Justin and I.

As I submitted Justin’s final question first, he ended up in 13,460th place while I ended up in 13,649th place.  A long way from first place to be sure, but I’m pretty happy to just have completed it.

The graphic to the right is what showed up once you’d completed the journey.

Dropquest 2011

Today at 2pm Eastern, Dropbox started their Dropquest 2011.  It will be going on for the next two weeks and has several great prizes along with the ability to gain 1GB of space or more by completing all the various quests.

We weren’t able to start it on time and have had delays, but are doing good so far.  We’re both on step 14 at this time…

Run To Keep Warm

Before I left for work today, I decided that I wanted to run after work as the weather was looking better and the roads should be clearer.  However, just after I left the house I (of course) realized that I had forgotten my running gear.  It wasn’t really worth going back for since I was already running late so I decided to just run a shorter run once I got home.

After I arrived home after work, I took Sparky out after getting into my gear.  While getting dressed I checked for new updates on my iPhone and lookie there – a new Nike+ GPS update!  The latest update (3.0.1) added in Nike+ Tag.  This allows you to play “tag” with someone else – either on distance-based or time-based runs.  Whoever runs the shortest or least-time is “it.”  As my only running friend on Nike+ is Jake, I started a game of tag with him then started my run with a goal of running only three miles.

Once I got going it was clear that this run wasn’t going to be as easy as I’d thought.  The roads were better than yesterday, but as two sections of road that I run on don’t have City Buses running on them, they really weren’t that great either.  As I didn’t have too much ice during the run though, it could have been worse.  When I had run about 3/4 of a mile, I was about ready to just run only two miles instead as my breath was coming right back at me (this can make it harder to breathe as you are exhaling a lot more air at a time than if you were walking which would mean that I’m not getting enough fresh air in on each breath).  However, once I did finally reach the first mile I decided that I wasn’t going to give up that easily and forged on.

During my runs, the Nike+ GPS app informs me of my distance every half-mile and every ten minutes.  Once I got to two miles, I turned around and made my way back.  I completed my run a short two miles later.  I didn’t beat my earlier run’s average pace, but I am pretty happy with the pace I was able to get – 8’09″/mi.  I’ve been slowly lowering that number over time and hope to have it around 7′/mi by the time I run the Purdue Challenge in April.

Overall, I have now ran 151.3 miles with the Nike+ GPS app and a total of 891.22 miles!
